Hostilities have been raging in southern Arakan State’s Thandwe Township for nearly a month, and the war zone continues to expand, according to residents.

Fighting broke out between junta troops and the Arakkha Army (AA) on April 13 near Yay Sin Village in Thandwe. Clashes have since intensified, spreading across northern Thandwe.

The Myanmar military has been providing air and artillery support for its ground troops in Thandwe.

“The regime has continuously provided air and artillery support. Yesterday, a village was hit by a junta artillery strike, and the war zone has expanded,” said a Thandwe resident.

Thabyu Chaing and Linthi villages were hit by junta bombing raids on Tuesday. Thabyu Chaing is only 10 miles from Thandwe Town.

The regime is using its army, navy and air forces to defend against the AA’s attacks in Thandwe. The regime has also sent junta reinforcements from Arakan State’s Gwa Township and Ayeyarwady Region to Thandwe, said residents.

“Junta naval vessels and bases near Thandwe Town fired shells at Shwe Hlay and Thabyu Chaing today. We also heard sporadic artillery strikes in the mountains,” said another resident.

The fighting has forced residents from more than 10 villages in Thandwe Township to flee their homes. The regime has also cut off trade following the fighting, and the prices of goods and medicines have skyrocketed.

“We can’t buy certain foodstuffs due to the junta’s blockade. The prices of the remaining stocks have increased by four times, and people cannot afford to buy. Displaced people are facing hardship,” said a resident of Yay Kauk Village

The AA has seized nine townships in Arakan and Chin states since fighting flared anew in November. Hostilities remain intense in at least four other townships in Arakan State.
