Junta deploys fighter jets to bomb Ponnagyun

The military regime launched intensive airstrikes using fighter jets on Kuntaung Village and surrounding areas in Arakan State’s Ponnagyun Township, near the Sittwe border, on the morning of September 17, according to local sources.

Starting around 9:50 a.m., four junta fighter jets carried out at least seven consecutive bombing runs in the area.

“The jet fighters bombed us one after another,” a ground source reported. “One jet dropped bombs, followed immediately by another. They also fired heavy machine guns, while a Y-12 aircraft dropped additional bombs. They have struck at least seven times so far, and the attack is still ongoing.”

Earlier, at 7 a.m., junta fighter jets dropped two bombs near Kuntaung Village and the Minchaung Bridge, followed by Y-12 bombing attacks at 8:20 a.m.

The strikes follow earlier attacks on September 16, when junta jets bombed mountain ranges near Ponnagyun Town while military units based in Sittwe provided continuous heavy artillery shelling.

Persistent daily aerial bombardment across Ponnagyun Township in recent days has triggered severe panic among local communities.

“They bombed us yesterday, and we have heard explosions more than 10 times today,” a male resident from Ponnagyun Township said. “Jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft are still circling overhead near Ponnagyun Town. Locals are terrified as these airstrikes happen almost daily.”

Heavy clashes between the military regime and the Arakan Army have raged along the Sittwe-Ponnagyun border since September 4, with junta forces resorting to intense aerial bombardments.

Under Operation 4926, the military regime has attempted offensives to push into Arakan Army-controlled territories in Ponnagyun and Rathedaung townships, but ground advances remain blocked by Arakan Army defensive operations.
