Several social media platforms, including Twitch, Facebook, YouTube and MediaFire, have taken down accounts used by Myanmar’s military regime for propaganda purposes.

According to a statement by Justice For Myanmar, the removals followed pressure from civil society organizations and letters sent to technology companies urging them to block the military regime’s propaganda accounts.

Amazon-owned video streaming platform Twitch has removed Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV), 14 Myanmar radio stations and MITV live broadcasts linked to the MITV website.

Justice For Myanmar said Twitch also blocked the creation of new accounts and prevented the continuation of live broadcasts at its request.

The group said Facebook has removed the military regime’s MITV page, the accounts of the Yadanabon newspaper, and a junta-controlled Ministry of Information account. However, YouTube has refused to remove MITV, it added.

File-sharing website MediaFire has also deleted the Yadanabon newspaper’s accounts and has now removed a total of 404 social media accounts and pages linked to the military regime, according to the statement.

Justice For Myanmar said it has also written to Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Apple, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Telegram, Cloudflare and ApkPure, but no action has been taken so far.

“It is urgent that these companies take action now and remove accounts that are spreading the Myanmar regime’s propaganda,” said Ma Yadanar Maung, spokesperson for Justice For Myanmar. “This will promote human rights, protect users, and fully comply with international sanctions.”

Justice For Myanmar said the closure of the military regime’s propaganda accounts is an important step in disrupting its ability to spread propaganda to the Myanmar public and the international community.

The statement added that the reported accounts are controlled by individuals and organisations subject to sanctions imposed by several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada and Australia.

Justice For Myanmar also said the military regime is intensifying efforts to spread propaganda and disinformation ahead of elections scheduled for December and January.
