Intense fighting has broken out in Padaung Township, Bago Region, as the military regime launches an offensive to retake the strategic Point 666 hilltop base, currently held by the Arakan Army (AA), according to military sources.

The junta is reportedly advancing troops from Sinlan Village in an attempt to regain control of the hilltop within the Otshitpin military station. A military source said the regime is also reinforcing its defences around No. 16 Weapons Factory (KAPASA-16) to counter the Arakan Army’s advance.

“The offensive is mainly being carried out by a column based in Sinlan Village. On the ground, their troops have suffered significant casualties and were forced to retreat in disarray due to interceptions. Clashes are ongoing near KAPASA-16. The junta is providing heavy artillery support from inside the factory while its infantry advances, making the situation extremely intense,” the source said.

Offensives by the Arakan Army and allied forces have reportedly breached areas around Point 503 and Point 206, located about five kilometers from KAPASA-16.

Point 666 hilltop base was first captured by the Arakan Army and its allies in October 2025 but was briefly retaken by the junta during a counter-offensive. Revolutionary forces recaptured the strategic base during intensified fighting on January 28 this year.

As the Arakan Army and allied forces close in on the factory, the regime has reportedly reduced gunpowder production at KAPASA-16 to focus on strengthening its defensive perimeter.

Captain Zin Yaw, a participant in the Civil Disobedience Movement, said: “After the capture of Point 666 hilltop base, only about three outposts remain between the Arakan Army and KAPASA-16. If the factory cannot provide adequate support, these outposts could fall soon. The junta will defend KAPASA factories at all costs. While other battalions can withdraw, they cannot abandon weapons factories because the machinery and technology are immovable. They have to mount a last-stand defence, which is why they are cutting production to prioritize fortifications.”

Military analysts say KAPASA-16 is a key gunpowder factory, playing a vital role in the production of weapons used by the regime nationwide. The Otshitpin military station in Padaung Township houses several major defence industries, including weapons factories 3, 5, 6, 9 and 16.

The Arakan Army and its allies began expanding operations into Bago Region in January 2025. To date, they have captured at least five junta bases, including Nyaunggyoe, Mothi, Bagankwal, and the strategic Point 666 hilltop base.
