Two women were injured on Tuesday after artillery shells fired by the Myanmar military fell and exploded in Tattaung Town, part of Arakan State’s Ann Township, according to locals.
The shells landed and exploded near an office for the Electricity Supply Enterprise in Ward-1 and a healthcare centre in Ward-2 on November 12, wounding the two women.
“A junta battalion in Ann fired multiple mortar shells into Tattaung Town at around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, wounding two local women. The injured are currently receiving medical treatment,” said a local resident.
Fighting between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) is escalating as the ethnic armed group is stepping up offensive attacks on the military’s Western Command in Ann Township.
Locals from villages near the scenes of fighting live in fear as the regime is responding to the AA attacks with aerial and artillery support.
“The military fires mortar shells into residential areas indiscriminately as it is defeated militarily. Locals feel insecure. Locals live in fear amid junta attacks,” said a resident of Ann.
The regime has carried out indiscriminate air and artillery attacks on residential areas and religious buildings, inflicting civilian casualties and property damage.
According to DMG tallies, 605 civilians were killed and 1,055 others were injured over the past year, with air raids responsible for the majority of civilian casualties.
