Monasteries and homes were reduced to ashes in Myanmar's military regime's artillery and drone attacks in conflict-hit Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State.

The regime launched a series of air and naval attacks on Hsinbote Ywama and Kyungyi villages near Maday Island - where a Chinese project is located - at around 11 p.m. on November 22.

A Myanmar Navy vessel fired at least seven artillery shells at the monastery in Hsinbote Ywama, setting the religious site and nearby homes ablaze, according to local residents.

"The monastery and nearby houses were reportedly set on fire due to the regime's Danyawadi Naval Base and continuous heavy weapons fire from nearby Myanmar Navy warships. The villagers have been living in hiding for a long time, so there were no casualties," said a Kyaukphyu resident familiar with the situation.

The regime also reportedly bombed a high school in Kyungyi Village with a drone, causing a school building to collapse.

The Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) are said to be engaged in a tense standoff in Kyaukphyu Township, with daily clashes taking place near the Minpyin, Kyungyi, Chaungphyar and Hsinbote village-tracts.

"In Kyaukphyu Township, fighting is now taking place every day in Hsinbote, Chaungphyar and Kyungyi village-tracts. There are clashes between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army, and the military situation in those areas is complicated," said another source familiar with the situation.

Junta troops are reportedly taking positions in and around Thaingchaung Reservoir and attacking the AA with ground assaults, backed by naval and air support, according to military sources.

Local residents have been forced to flee due to the fighting, with more than 40,000 people reportedly displaced.

Junta troops have been advancing into Thaingchaung, Gawtu and Yaynantaung villages since early November, forcing residents of 17 nearby villages - including Chaungphyar, Chaungwa and Chaungmyaung - to flee to Hsinbote, Sabahtar and Minyat villages.

The displaced people are in urgent need of shelter, food, drinking water and medicine, according to Triple-T, a group assisting displaced families.
