Ko Myo Myint Zaw, the manager of a shop who was arrested on suspicion of being the culprit in the murder of a young woman in Sittwe, was reportedly charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code at a United League of Arakan court on September 22.
Ma Nwe Thandar Win, 18, was found dead on August 15 with two stab wounds and bruises on her face and chin, in a shop where she worked near the state government offices in the Arakan State capital Sittwe. The Arakan Army interrogated some suspects in the murder of a young woman in Sittwe and had claimed to have identified the perpetrator.
“The ULA investigation team opened a case against the perpetrator under Section 302 of the Penal Code. He is not questioned at the court. The accused is Ko Myo Myint Zaw,” a lawyer close to the ULA court told DMG.
“The evidence will be collected in an orderly and correct manner, and [the investigation] will be carried out strictly in accordance with the court procedure. I would like to answer that we will take specific and decisive action to punish the perpetrator,” said U Khaing Thukha, spokesperson for the Arakan Army, at an online press conference on September 19.
“We will strictly and decisively take action against the perpetrator in the murder in accordance with the law,” he added.
Maung Myo Chit Soe, 19, from a neighbouring shop, was detained by the junta’s police force on August 16 for interrogation, and was subsequently charged with murder.
