A junta jet fighter on Friday night dropped bombs on two villages in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, destroying multiple homes.
No civilian casualties were reported in the junta's nighttime air attacks on the Muslim villages of Italia and Hsarkonbote.
"The two villages are located in the northeast of Maungdaw [Township] and are not far from the junta's Border Guard Force Battalion No. 5. No casualties were reported in the regime airstrikes," said a resident of Maungdaw.
Many local people from the villages have been displaced by fighting since May.
Hostilities between the Arakkha Army (AA) and military are escalating as the former steps up attacks on the latter's Border Guard Force (BGF) No. 5, the last standing junta battalion in besieged Maungdaw.
"I think the regime carried out airstrikes on the two Muslim villages as the AA has launched an offensive assault on BGF No. 5," said a local source.
On the Arakan front, the military regime is accused of attacking both AA positions and civilian areas with 500-lb, 200-lb and cluster bombs.
"In Rakhine [Arakan] State, conflict between the MAF [Myanmar armed forces] and Arakan Army has continued since November 2023, now affecting 16 out of 17 townships across the state - all except Munaung [aka Manaung]," the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said in a report on October 10.
"This resurgence has displaced an estimated 380,000 people in Rakhine and Paletwa Township in southern Chin [State], bringing the total current displacement in Rakhine State to likely well over 570,000 people," it added.
