A local woman from Barwa Village, part of Chin State’s Paletwa Township, who was severely injured in an artillery shelling last week, is currently receiving medical treatment at Sittwe General Hospital.

The 27-year-old victim has been identified as Ma Aye Moe Nwe. She was admitted to Paletwa Hospital after sustaining shrapnel wounds when an artillery shell landed and exploded in the village on November 4. Ma Aye Moe Nwe was subsequently transferred to Sittwe General Hospital, on November 5.

“She [Ma Aye Moe Nwe] sustained shrapnel wounds to her back and received medical treatment at Paletwa Hospital. She was transferred to Sittwe General Hospital yesterday,” said an official from the Phyusin Myitta social organisation, a local charity in Kyauktaw.

Clashes between the military and local anti-regime forces were recently reported near Barwa Village, with junta troops reportedly firing mortar shells into the village.

“Fighting between the military and local resistance forces broke out near Barwa Village. Locals are worried about their safety as the military fired heavy weapons into the village,” said a resident of Paletwa who did not want to be named for security reasons.

Military tensions are continuing to rise between the military and local People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) in Paletwa Township, according to residents.

According to a DMG tally, 64 people died and 162 others were injured in explosions of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERWs) last year in Arakan State and neighbouring Paletwa Township.
