Heavy rains and high tides have flooded some 10 villages in Arakan State’s Kyauktaw Township, with flood victims in need of food and shelter, according to residents.
Floodwaters reached as high as 10 feet in the villages, including Thayet Tapin, Maha Muni and Nyaungchaung.
Daw Sandar Khaing from Maha Muni Village said: “Water levels started to rise around 7 a.m. yesterday morning. All the villagers had to move to Maha Muni Pagoda. Floodwaters have not yet receded. Some houses were inundated to their roofs. We need shelter and food for now.”

A DMG reporter who went to Maha Muni and Thayet Tapin villages found that floodwaters had not yet receded as of press time.
The Humanitarian and Development Coordination Office of the Arakkha Army (AA) said it has evacuated flood victims to safety.
Houses, shops and paddy farms were damaged, and domestic animals were killed by floods, said residents. The financial losses in their totality are not yet known.
“All the farms were inundated. Fuel prices are exorbitant this year, and farmers can’t afford to regrow their crops,” said farmer U Maung Maung Hsan from Maha Muni Village.
Some villages in Ponnagyun, Mrauk-U and Minbya townships have also been hit by floods, according to residents.
