Military sources on the ground say that Myanmar's regime has been making military preparations in Sittwe, the Arakan State capital and one of the only remaining towns it holds in the state.

The military regime has been redeploying troops and reinforcing the Zawmadat, Gantgawkyun and Kyauktan Chay military outposts on the Sittwe-Ponnagyun border.

"The military regime is making military preparations. The military regime is attacking Wah Bo, Yeyoepyin and Sabahtar villages, which they no longer control, with drones and heavy weapons almost every day," said a military source on the ground.

The exchange of heavy weapons fire between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) in Sittwe Township has not taken place for months, but since July 22, the former has been increasing its activity, including use of artillery fire. Locals say the Myanmar military has been shelling Sittwe and surrounding areas since July 22.

"The Myanmar military has been firing heavy weapons from Sittwe in recent days. I heard about three rounds of heavy weapons yesterday," said a local man in Ponnagyun.

The AA has surrounded Sittwe after capturing Rathedaung, Ponnagyun and Pauktaw townships around the Arakan State capital.

The situation on the Sittwe frontline is tense, but no serious fighting has yet occurred.

"The Myanmar military has had a chance to prepare well for a defensive operation in downtown Sittwe. We also need to be careful that the military regime is now conducting offensive operations throughout Myanmar," said a military observer in Arakan State.

The military regime still controls only Kyaukphyu, Sittwe, and Manaung townships in Arakan State, as battle lines have been drawn in Kyaukphyu and Sittwe that have remained largely unchanged in recent weeks and months, with neither side advancing or retreating.
