A man who was recently rearrested at the Kyaukphyu Prison gate after serving time on politically motivated charges was sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code, an incitement provision, on September 1, according to a family member.
Ko Tin Tun, 31, from Kyaukphyu's Ayarshi Ward, was ostensibly released on August 1 after serving his previous sentence. But his family told DMG that junta police rearrested him before he could leave the prison compound. The Kyaukphyu Township Court sentenced Ko Tin Tun to 10 years in prison under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code on September 1, said a family member.
"He was arrested and imprisoned without any guilt. When he was released from prison, the military regime re-arrested him and sentenced him to a long prison term. This is completely unfair. I feel like the military regime is oppressing the people because it has power in its hands," the family member said.
U Tin Tun was first sentenced to three years in prison by the Kyaukphyu Township Court under Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act after being arrested by junta soldiers in November 2022.
"Four people were released from Kyaukphyu Prison, but they were re-arrested at the prison gate. One of them was from Kularbar Village and the others were from other villages," said a local man in Kyaukphyu.
According to a list compiled by DMG, there are more than 10 people who have been rearrested at the prison gate after being released from Kyaukphyu Prison.
According to a DMG tally, from early 2022 to present, at least 110 Kyaukphyu residents have been arrested by the military regime for alleged links to the Arakan Army (AA) and held in prisons, police stations, and interrogation camps.
Most of them have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from six months to 10 years under politically fraught statutes such as Section 505(a) of the Penal Code, and Sections 17(a) and (b) of the Unlawful Associations Act. Some are facing serious health problems due to lack of access to medical treatment.
