Ma Moe San Suu Kyi, a youth leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and daughter of former Arakan State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu, has been sentenced to an additional five years in prison by the military regime.

The junta-controlled Kamayut Township Court in Yangon handed down the latest sentence on July 6.

A former NLD member said Ma Moe San Suu Kyi was convicted under Section 52(a) of the Counterterrorism Law.

“What we know is that she was accused of having contacts with the NUG, supporting and encouraging the Civil Disobedience Movement, and maintaining links with armed groups. Similar allegations were used in her previous convictions. Under the regime, even if the accusations are untrue, there is nothing that can be done,” a former NLD member from Arakan State told DMG.

Following the 2021 military coup, Ma Moe San Suu Kyi was sentenced to six years in prison under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code and Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act. The latest ruling increases her total prison sentence to 11 years.

She was arrested in Kamayut Township, Yangon, on May 9, 2021.

In June 2023, she was transferred from Insein Prison to Tharrawaddy Prison. Although she had completed her sentence in August 2025, the regime did not release her and continued to hold her in detention.

“Handing Ma Moe San Suu Kyi another prison sentence is a politically motivated fabrication by the regime. It reflects its political grudge against her as an NLD member and the daughter of the former Arakan chief minister. Unfortunately, this is no longer unusual. Under the current situation, people can only try to avoid arrest by the regime,” an Arakanese politician said.

He added that the regime continues to prosecute and imprison NLD leaders and other political figures out of political hostility toward the NLD government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

Ma Moe San Suu Kyi's father, former Arakan State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu, is also serving prison sentences imposed by the regime under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, Section 25 of the Natural Disaster Management Law, and Section 130(a) of the Penal Code.

U Nyi Pu was initially detained at Sittwe Prison before being transferred to Insein Prison in Yangon in May 2023. He is reportedly suffering from severe cataracts that have left him nearly blind.
