Locals say Myanmar's military regime is sending reinforcements, weapons, and tanks from its Southwest Command in Pathein to Laymyethna Township in Ayeyarwady Region, where fighting is frequent.
Three warships from the Southwest Command and Pathein Naval Base arrived at Laymyethna along the Pathein River, carrying tanks and military equipment.
"One warship is docked at Ai Tha Byu Village, where it is cooperating with the military base in that village. The other two warships are docked at Laymyethna. The fighting is expected to intensify as tanks have been spotted on board these ships," said a local man in Laymyethna. The junta warships have been in Laymyethna Township since July 15.
Military sources said the tanks now being carried aboard the warships are tanks that can be easily deployed in land and naval operations.
In Laymyethna Township, the Arakan Army (AA) and other revolutionary forces control most of the villages along the Pathein-Monywa road, and local residents say the military regime is stationed in some villages between Laymyethna town and the Pathein-Monywa road.
The military's No. 344 Artillery Battalion in Yekyi Township was also reinforced with more than 200 troops from junta battalions based in Kyonpyaw and Danubyu in early July.
"The military regime is not just reinforcing forces in Ayeyarwady Region. The military regime is also currently reinforcing forces in Laymyethna, which is an attempt to regain control of the Arakan border," said a military source in Ayeyarwady Region.
Fighting has been ongoing between the Myanmar military and anti-junta forces in Laymyethna Township since May, with the rebel forces seizing at least five villages, including a junta police station.
The AA and local resistance groups are conducting joint military operations on the Ayeyarwady front, and have captured at least 10 camps, including military outposts and police stations belonging to the regime.
