One person was killed and five others, including two children, were injured when the military junta carried out an airstrike on Thandwe Town in Arakan State at around 8 p.m. on September 27.
Local residents reported that the casualties occurred when a junta jet fighter dropped two bombs on Ward No. 4 in Thandwe Town.
"We hadn't even gone to bed yet. We heard the aircraft and were about to run for shelter when the explosions hit. We didn't know where it struck until the morning," said a Thandwe resident.
The airstrike killed U Nyi Nyi and injured Maung Thant Zin Phyo (6), Maung Aung Thiha Soe (14), Daw Khin Khin Htay (37), Daw Khin Htwe (53), and U Tun Naing Min (42). All are receiving medical treatment.
The nighttime strike and casualties have caused widespread fear and anxiety among local residents.
The regime has repeatedly targeted civilian residential areas with airstrikes. Just a day earlier, on September 26, a bombing in Taungup Town damaged a monastery, though no civilians were harmed.
"By attacking at night when people are sleeping, the military council is blatantly committing war crimes. We strongly condemn these actions and urge the UN not to stand by idly," said a youth human rights activist from Arakan.
Human rights groups have urged the international community to take effective action against the junta's war crimes.
Activists say the lack of accountability and ineffective responses from the UN and international actors have allowed the junta to continue committing atrocities against civilians with impunity.
