Continuous heavy rains over recent days have caused severe flooding across most townships in Arakan State, prompting the United League of Arakan (ULA), the political wing of the Arakan Army (AA), to launch emergency rescue and relief operations for affected residents, according to local people.
Persistent rainfall since 4 July has caused widespread flooding and rising water levels in Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, Minbya, Ponnagyun, Taungup, Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Paletwa townships.
"This morning, I saw members of the Arakan Army helping residents in several flooded villages across Kyauktaw Township. They were mainly evacuating people to safer locations and distributing rice and emergency relief supplies to some families. They also urged residents to cooperate in natural disaster prevention efforts," a Kyauktaw resident said.
Residents in the worst-hit townships are in urgent need of food, drinking water and temporary shelter after floodwaters submerged large parts of their communities.
The ULA is carrying out rescue and relief operations in Thayet Tapin, Kyauktalone, Shwetalay, Nyaungchaung, Kyaukkyat and Sabarseik villages in Kyauktaw Township, as well as the Phontharchaung area in Minbya Township.
While the ULA is relocating flood victims to higher ground and providing food and emergency relief supplies in those areas, flood victims in other affected townships remain in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
The ongoing monsoon floods have affected at least nine townships in Arakan State and Paletwa Township, Chin State, displacing residents from more than 100 wards and villages.
"Arakan State is not only suffering from the devastation of ongoing conflict but is now also facing a major natural disaster. Therefore, the ULA will need to expand its public services and relief efforts. Aid has not yet reached some remote areas, and social welfare workers have been unable to access certain locations. In some communities, local residents are organizing self-help groups to meet their immediate needs," another Arakan resident said.
Social welfare workers and aid volunteers estimate that around 100,000 people have been affected by flooding across Arakan State and Paletwa Township.
According to a statement released on 9 July by the Humanitarian and Development Coordination Office (HDCO) under the ULA, the flooding has caused riverbank erosion and damaged roads and bridges, leaving at least three people dead.
Tornadoes also recently struck Kyaukphyu, Ramree, Taungup, Thandwe and Gwa townships, damaging 240 houses and other buildings.
The HDCO said continued heavy rainfall could worsen the flooding and stressed the need for immediate and coordinated emergency response efforts.
