Police arrested three residents of Taungup Township on Sunday morning including a member of the Arakan League for Democracy (ALD), according to an official of a party concerned and local residents.

The prominent Arakanese politician Dr. Aye Maung, who was recently released from prison as part of a mass amnesty by the military government, has embarked on a multi-township tour of Arakan State. 

The military-run Arakan State Administration Council has warned residents of a recently reinstated requirement to inform local authorities of guests who stay overnight at their homes, saying legal action will be taken against those who fail to do so.

Members of the Arakan Front Party (AFP) leadership including Dr. Aye Maung have not been allowed to officially resign from the Arakan National Party (ANP) by the latter, so they have sought assistance from the military-appointed Union Election Commission (UEC), AFP officials said.

The reconstituted Union Election Commission (UEC), formed by the military junta’s State Administration Council (SAC), met with several political parties in Naypyidaw on February 26. 

A court in Arakan State’s Taungup Township on Friday officially charged four men including a former municipal committee chairman under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law over their alleged ties to the Arakan Army (AA).

Out of 68 hotels, motels and guesthouses in Arakan State’s Thandwe District that closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only 18 have been able to resume operations to date, according to the district’s Directorate of Hotels and Tourism.
