The Arakan Students’ Union has criticised the government for detaining anti-war student protesters for more than three months without trial. 

All camps for internally displaced people (IDPs) will be inspected for the return of IDPs as fighting between the Tatmadaw and Arakan Army has stopped in Arakan State, according to Colonel Min Than, Arakan State minister for Security and Border Affairs.

The Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army (AA) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the deployment of troops in Arakan State, and the Tatmadaw will take responsibility for clearing landmines, said Col. Min Than, Arakan State minister for Security and Border Affairs.

The Ministry of Education has announced that it has arranged to see scores of the 2020 matriculation exams at the website of the Department of Myanmar Examinations through mobile phone or alternative online means free of charge as of January 17.

The Arakan Students’ Union campaigned on Friday morning at the central market in Sittwe, calling for the unconditional release of students detained in prisons across Myanmar for anti-war campaigns, as well as all other political prisoners. 

A proposal urging the Union government to restore 4G internet in those Arakan State townships where only 2G internet is currently provided was submitted to the Arakan State Hluttaw on January 14. 

Three activists who are facing charges under Article 19 of the Peaceful Assembly and Procession Law over a human rights demonstration in the Arakan State capital Sittwe last month have said they will ask the state high court to drop the charges. 

The Arakan State Hluttaw on Thursday approved a motion to remove the Arakan Army (AA) from being designated a terrorist organisation in order to build lasting peace. 

The first regular session of the third Arakan State Hluttaw is likely to be convened on February 9, according to incumbent State Hluttaw Speaker U San Kyaw Hla.

The Arakan State government is inviting tenders to develop office buildings, roads, bridges and electricity access in Lay Taung town, Ramree Township, according to the Organising Committee for Lay Taung Town.

Some camps for internally displaced people (IDPs) in downtown Buthidaung, Arakan State, are currently facing food shortages due to lack of donations from well-wishers, according to IDP camp officials.

Activists are asking for donations to fund surgery for a Mrauk-U Township resident who was injured in a landmine blast in June 2019.

The Directorate of Hotels and Tourism in Arakan State is aiming to make Gwa Township a new destination for travellers as part of larger efforts to develop the state’s tourism industry, said U Ye Aung Moe, manager of the directorate. 

The Arakan State government sent a letter to the National-Level Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment of COVID-19 on January 12 requesting that border trade camps be allowed to resume operations since infection rates are decreasing, said U Kyaw Aye Thein, the Arakan State minister for Finance, Revenue, Planning and Economics. 

An Arakan State MP submitted a proposal to the state parliament on Tuesday urging the state government to give special attention to landmine clearance so that internally displaced people (IDPs) are able to return home and rehabilitate safely.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) foresees the withdrawal of its designation of the Arakan Army (AA) as a terrorist organisation, pending clarifications to be presented by the Tatmadaw. 

A proposal in the Arakan State Hluttaw on January 11 urged the union government via its Arakan State counterpart to rescind the designation of the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army as terrorist groups in order to build eternal peace. 

Forty-three civil society organisations (CSOs) including prominent signatories Athan, Land in Our Hands, Rakhine Youth New Generation Network, Rakhine Ethnics Congress and Generation Wave, issued a joint statement on January 10 demanding that recent lawsuits against human rights activists be withdrawn.
