Two ethnic Arakanese political parties looked set to hold a plurality of seats in Arakan State as votes continued to be tallied on Monday, with the Arakan National Party (ANP) saying it won all races in Sittwe Township and the Arakan Front Party (AFP) claiming to be leading in the four constituencies up for grabs in Kyaukphyu Township.  

The National League for Democracy (NLD) has won all constituencies in Gwa Township, Arakan State, where incumbent Chief Minister U Nyi Pu was among the contestants for a seat, according to polling station representatives of the ruling party.

Election Day voting fraud has been alleged in Sittwe Township’s Kwetae village-tract, where one candidate says he witnessed people attempting to cast “substitute” ballots on behalf of voters who did not come to the polls. 

Some Arakanese people in Yangon have complained that they were not able to cast ballots for the Arakanese (Rakhine) ethnic affairs minister post in Yangon Region. 

About 160 people were unable to vote in Sunday’s general election because their names were not included on the voter lists for seven polling stations in Sittwe Township’s Mingan Ward, according to political parties’ representatives at the respective polling locations.

Only an estimated 30% of some 10,300 eligible voters in Sittwe’s Mingan Ward cast ballots in Sunday’s general election, according to representatives of political parties who monitored the polls, with observers also reporting low turnout in Ann Township.
