The 5th Military Operations Command, Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 544 and 346 are based in Taungup. Residents have reported seeing Muslim conscripts at those battalions since earlier this month.

With conflict zones expanding across the country, the space for civilians to flee the fighting has increasingly shrunk, said a weekly analysis report from Burma News International-Myanmar (BNI-Myanmar).

“There is no escape route for local people and we are trapped by the fighting. We are worried about our safety because the military-AA clashes are getting closer to Thandwe,” said a local resident.

Villagers in Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township have expressed concern for their safety as the regime has planted landmines near their villages.

Thousands of residents from five villages in Sittwe Township, Arakan State, have reportedly been forced to relocate by Myanmar’s military regime.
