The 23rd anniversary of the Sittwe University was celebrated at the Convocation Hall of the university in Sittwe, Arakan State on 4-5 September in conjunction with a paper reading session, a market for buying products and music concert.

The paper reading session was held with the aim of attracting faculty members and students to do research work and apply experimental results for the benefit of the country, said Dr. Win Naing, the rector of the university.

The music concert and market were also included in the celebrations as exams for students draw nearer, he said.

He continued, “We organized the paper reading session yesterday. Today we enjoyed the music concert. Both faulty members and students happily sang songs and danced. We also arranged the sale event.”

Birthday celebrations for the University of Sittwe have not been observed in recent years and this year’s auspicious event is the first of its kind. The students want to celebrate the birthday of the university annually.

“We want to honour the anniversary of the university annually. By doing so, we can preserve our traditional food and keep our traditional dance. I would like to urge the university’s authorities to jointly organize the Padetha dance,” said Ko Kyaw Htay Naing, member of the Student’s Union of the university.

The University of Sittwe was established in 1996 and it is the sole university in Arakan State.
