An Arakanese man who was stabbed in Mae Sot, Thailand, is in urgent need of financial support for his medical treatment as his family struggles to cover mounting expenses, according to relatives and local aid organizations.

Ko Oo Aung Myint, 24, a worker at a knife-handle factory in Mae Sot, was stabbed on January 10, sustaining life-threatening injuries. He is currently being treated in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“He has been unconscious for 16 days. No one is sponsoring his medical expenses, and we have to find the money ourselves. Our family is poor and cannot afford the costs. We have reached out to Arakanese community organizations for help,” said Ma Than Than Soe, the victim's sister, in an interview with DMG.

The incident occurred when Ko Oo Aung Myint’s co-worker, Ko Min Soe, 30, and a 40-year-old man, U Sithu from Shwe Kokku in Kayin State, were drinking alcohol and got into an argument. Ko Oo Aung Myint was stabbed while attempting to mediate the dispute.

Dissatisfied with his intervention, U Sithu allegedly stabbed Ko Oo Aung Myint three times in the chest and upper pubic area, causing severe internal injuries.

The victim is originally from Suritchaung Village in Arakan State’s Mrauk-U Township.

His family reported that daily hospital fees exceed 10,000 Thai Baht. Having exhausted their funds, they have appealed to the Arakanese community in Mae Sot for support.

Ko Zin Myo, secretary of the Arakanese Community in Mae Sot, explained the challenges in seeking justice and aid. “When we tried to file a police report, the authorities noted that the incident wasn’t reported immediately. Since the patient is still unconscious, it’s a difficult situation. Our organization’s funds have also been depleted from assisting displaced people. We urgently need help from Arakanese organizations and migrant workers across Thailand.”

Although Ko Oo Aung Myint’s employer initially promised to cover all medical expenses, they later provided only 10,000 Baht, arguing that the costs were too high and that the incident occurred during a social gathering outside of work hours, not on the job.

Hospital authorities have informed the family that the total medical expenses could exceed 200,000 Baht, leaving the family in a desperate financial position.

The perpetrator has reportedly fled to Kayin State.
