Intense clashes erupt in Ayeyarwady as Arakan Army reports weapons seized from junta

Intense clashes are taking place between the military regime and the Arakan Army along the Arakan-Ayeyarwady border, with junta forces suffering heavy casualties, retreating in disarray, and losing weapons and ammunition, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by Arakan Info Desk.

The statement said the military regime launched a large-scale offensive against Arakan Army positions in Ayeyarwady Region, prompting counter-offensives by the ethnic Arakanese armed group.

It added that the regime has also been carrying out almost daily artillery shelling, drone strikes, and airstrikes.

On August 2, the regime launched an assault northwest of Yonepin Village in Yekyi Township, Ayeyarwady Region, with heavy drone and artillery support. Fighting lasted from shortly after 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., resulting in casualties among junta troops and forcing them to retreat, according to the statement.

The statement added that Arakan Army troops seized the bodies of junta soldiers, along with weapons and ammunition, following the clash.

A second clash broke out near Yonepin Village at around 3 p.m. on the same day, during which the Arakan Army launched defensive and counter-offensive operations, inflicting heavy losses on junta forces and forcing them to retreat.

Similarly, on August 1, heavy fighting took place east of Thabaung Kalay Village in Thabaung Township, Ayeyarwady Region, from shortly after noon until after 3 p.m., during which the Arakan Army also seized weapons and ammunition from junta forces.

According to the Arakan Army statement, offensive and defensive operations in Ayeyarwady Region fluctuated during July due to heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions.

The Arakan Army said clashes are now taking place almost daily across Ayeyarwady Region, with major and minor battles occurring in various locations.

The Arakan Army headquarters also commended its troops for their battlefield performance and command structure in repelling repeated military offensives.
