Fierce fighting has broken out in recent days between regime forces and a coalition led by the Arakan Army near the Mrauksan Village-based junta’s Artillery Battalion No. 344 in Yekyi Township, Ayeyarwady Region. The regime is reportedly treating its wounded soldiers at nearby civilian hospitals.
Since the clashes intensified near the junta artillery regiment on May 9, the regime has been sending injured personnel to public hospitals in Ngathainggyaung and Yekyi for medical treatment.
"The fighting is still ongoing near the junta’s Artillery Battalion No. 344. The regime has suffered heavy casualties. Previously, wounded soldiers were sent to the No. 4 military hospital in Pathein. Now, fearing that news of the heavy losses might spread, they initially treated them inside the junta artillery regiment. But as the number of wounded continues to rise, they have been secretly sending them to public hospitals in Ngathainggyaung and Yekyi," said a local source in Yekyi.
Offensives by the Arakan Army and its allies have reportedly penetrated within one mile of the junta artillery regiment. The regime is currently defending its position with heavy artillery support and airstrikes.
The regime and resistance forces are also engaged in clashes in Laymyethna and Thabaung townships of Ayeyarwady Region, where the regime is using a large number of militia members to reinforce its defense.
The junta’s Artillery Battalion No. 344, where fighting is currently intense, is located on the Gwa-Ngathainggyaung Road, a gateway to Arakan State. Security has also been tightened at the nearby Yaynanttha security checkpoint.
"Because of the heavy fighting near the Mrauksan Village-based artillery regiment, the regime is strictly inspecting travelers at the Yaynanttha security checkpoint. They are checking for recommendation letters from ward and village administrators. The sound of fighting can be heard every day," said another male resident of Yekyi.
The Yaynanttha security checkpoint is a strategic inspection point situated at the junction of the Pathein-Monywa road and the Ngathainggyaung-Gwa road. Consequently, local residents have to be extremely cautious when passing through this checkpoint.
A joint force headed by the Arakan Army has been conducting military operations in Ayeyarwady Region since January 2025. They have gained control over parts of the Pathein-Monywa road and have captured several military outposts.
