The Arakan Army (AA) announced on Monday that Muslim militants ambushed an AA border security post located between Border Posts 20 and 21 on the Bangladesh–Arakan border in northern Maungdaw Township before crossing back into Bangladesh.

At around 6 a.m. on December 13, about 10 Muslim militants crossed into Arakan State from the Bangladesh side and ambushed the AA’s border security post with small arms, including a 40mm M79 launcher, for several minutes.

When AA fighters returned fire, the militants reportedly retreated to a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) post on the Bangladesh side.

A Maungdaw resident familiar with the military situation said: “On December 13, Muslim armed groups attacked the AA’s border security post on Kyee Island. There were no casualties. Currently, the Arakan Army is taking measures to ensure security and stability in the border area.”

The attack was carried out by the Muslim armed group Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA), which claimed responsibility on its social media page.

Muslim armed groups, including the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) and ARA, are targeting AA border posts and civilians in northern Maungdaw and Buthidaung townships.

A young resident of northern Maungdaw said: “The threat of violence from Muslim militants in the Maungdaw border areas remains a constant challenge. We cannot carry out border trade or agricultural activities as before. It is important to defeat this violence.”

Muslim militants are operating from refugee camps in Bangladesh and carrying out ambushes in northern Maungdaw, according to the Arakan Army.

The AA said corrupt BGB commanders are unknowingly encouraging militants to sneak across the border and attack AA posts, causing serious disruption to border stability.

The Arakan Army also expressed concern that such incidents could lead to unintended consequences and erode existing and developing trust between the authorities of Bangladesh and the AA.

The AA statement said Muslim armed groups such as ARSA and RSO have repeatedly carried out ambushes, killings, kidnappings and extortion against civilians.
