The Myanmar regime has recently increased its naval deployments and attempted an amphibious offensive near Sanae Town and surrounding areas in Kyaukphyu Township, an area controlled by the Arakan Army.

At around 7 a.m. on 10 May, a group of regime naval landing craft attempted to deploy troops near a local landmark known as Mt. Awa on the Sanae side of the Thanzit River, triggering clashes with the Arakan Army.

“Junta soldiers were transported by naval landing craft from the Taung Maw Gyi naval station to attempt a landing at Mt. Awa. This led to intense fighting with the Arakan Army,” a local resident said.

The Arakan Army reportedly intercepted the naval group before it could dock, forcing the vessels to retreat toward the Thanzit River. However, at around 5 p.m. on the same day, the regime reportedly carried out drone strikes around Sanae Town.

The Taung Maw Gyi naval station, which operates under the junta’s Danyawadi Naval Base, is located about 17 miles south of Kyaukphyu town, while Sanae Town lies just over five miles from the naval station.

Fighting is also ongoing near Thaingchaung and Zaichaung villages, around 10 miles south of Kyaukphyu town, where regime forces and the Arakan Army remain engaged in clashes.

Military observers in Kyaukphyu said the regime appears to be attempting to use the Taung Maw Gyi naval station as a launching point for an amphibious operation toward Sanae Town.

“I believe the regime is trying to land troops near Sanae Town to place Arakan Army forces under pressure from two directions during the Kyaukphyu battles. Since Kyaukphyu Township is surrounded by sea, a successful landing near Sanae could cut off Arakan Army troops positioned on the previous frontline,” a Kyaukphyu resident familiar with the military situation said.

There are also assessments that the regime, after suffering heavy losses in the Kyaukphyu battles, may be attempting to open another front near Sanae Town to divert Arakan Army forces.

Due to the attempted landings and drone attacks, local residents and internally displaced persons sheltering in Sanae Town and nearby villages are reportedly fleeing to safer locations.

In Kyaukphyu Township, the Arakan Army has regained control of several areas it had previously withdrawn from, while the regime has continued reinforcing its remaining battalions and positions.

Arakan Army chief Maj-Gen Twan Mrat Naing stated on 10 April that the remaining decisive battles would be concluded with total victory before the end of 2027.

Since that statement, local residents said the regime has significantly stepped up military preparations and reinforcements in Kyaukphyu Township.
