Rising thefts, robberies in Taungup heighten local concerns

Rising incidents of theft and robbery in Taungup Township, an area controlled by the Arakan Army in Arakan State, are causing growing safety concerns among local residents.

Locals report that recent crimes do not appear to be isolated incidents but may involve organized groups, leaving residents living in fear.

On August 15, a motorcycle was stolen in Taungup town, and the owner has yet to recover the vehicle.

"The stolen motorcycle was a Honda RSX. The door was not forced open and appeared normal. Judging from this situation, it could not have been done by just one person; it was likely stolen by a group," said a local man familiar with the incident.

Earlier, on August 12, another motorcycle was stolen in Taungup, with no developments reported to date.

Residents said that despite reporting the recent surge in thefts and robberies to local authorities, no effective action or progress has been made.

The rise in crime, coupled with a lack of effective law enforcement, has heightened anxiety among local communities.

The Arakan Army has reportedly imposed a nighttime curfew from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM in Taungup Township.

"Thefts have increased significantly in Taungup Township lately, with motorcycles being the primary target. Although the Arakan Army has issued a curfew order, thefts continue to rise," said another local man in Taungup.

The Arakan Army, which controls most of Arakan State, has established administrative bodies, judicial systems, and law enforcement mechanisms across its controlled territories.

However, the recent increase in criminal activity, including theft, robbery, murder, and sexual assault in areas controlled by the Arakan Army, has drawn public criticism over the effectiveness of its law enforcement.

Although the Arakan Army functions as a revolutionary administration, its focus on both active combat operations and administrative development presents ongoing operational challenges.
