The military regime has detained and is interrogating a tactical commanding officer and a battalion commander after losing at least three frontline outposts to the Arakan Army (AA) and its allies in Thabaung Township, Ayeyarwady Region.
On January 31, the Arakan Army and allied forces captured three strategic junta camps along the Thabaung–Thaephyu–Makyeezin road.
Following the loss, the regime reportedly detained a junta colonel overseeing military operations from Light Infantry Battalion No. 308 in Thabaung, along with a battalion commander.
“The Arakan Army and its allies seized three junta camps in Thabaung Township. Due to the loss of these outposts and heavy casualties during the fighting, the tactical commanding officer and the battalion commander overseeing the operation have been detained for nearly two weeks,” a military source in Ayeyarwady Region said.
The two officers have reportedly been held since February 2. The regime has been attempting to secure the Thabaung–Thaephyu–Makyeezin road to reinforce its offensives into Arakan State.
Local sources said intense fighting continues in mountainous areas near Thitonepu, Kyargaung, Thaephyu, Thabaunglay and Kinponechone villages.
To support its operations into Arakan State, the regime has deployed reinforcements from the Southwest Command based in Pathein and the Coastal Region Command based in Myeik.
“The regime is struggling to maintain full control over townships bordering Arakan State. While conducting ground offensives to secure the Thabaung–Makyeezin road, it is also carrying out airstrikes and heavy artillery attacks on resistance-controlled villages along the Pathein–Monywa road, as ground troops have been unable to make significant advances,” another source said.
The Arakan Army and its allies currently control most villages in Laymyethna and Ingapu townships along the Pathein–Monywa road, as well as several areas along the Thabaung–Makyeezin route.
The Ayeyarwady front — a joint operation of the Arakan Army, Ayeyarwady PDF (Tactical Unit 29), and other allied forces — has been active since January 2025. Resistance forces have reportedly seized at least 10 junta outposts and several key supply routes in the region.
