Four people including the chairperson of the Taungup Township Development Affairs Committee and the vice chair of the township’s Arakan National Party (ANP) chapter were arraigned under Myanmar’s Counter-Terrorism Law on June 30.
The Taungup Township Court has brought charges under the law against the local ANP leader, U Wai Thaung, and the township’s Development Affairs Committee chair, U Zeya Kyaw, as well as his younger brother U Sithu Kyaw Zan and a former chair of the Development Affairs Committee, U San Ngwe. If convicted, they face up to seven years in prison.
“They have been charged and accused of having ties to the Arakan Army, which the government has declared as a terrorist group,” said lawyer U Tin Nyo.
The four men were arrested in May and subsequently remanded at the Taungup Township Court. From there they were taken to Yangon by military plane and held in detention at Aung Thabyay, an interrogation facility in Mingaladon Township, according to the defendants.
They were held on a second remand at the North Okkalapa Township Court in Yangon. They were then brought to Thandwe town on June 2, and were remanded for a third time on June 16.
Their next court hearing has been scheduled for July 9.
