Fighting between the military regime and the Arakan Army (AA) is intensifying in Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State, with heavy weapons reportedly being used on a daily basis, according to local residents.

Since early December, clashes have occurred almost daily across the township, with exchanges of both heavy and small arms fire.

A Kyaukphyu resident said the AA is not launching attacks from fixed positions near villages such as Thaingchaung, Pyarte and Yaynantaung, but instead is intercepting and attacking areas where junta troops are stationed.

“The fighting is going on every day. We hear the sound of heavy weapons and small arms, and it is intense. The Arakan Army is not taking up positions, but is moving and attacking junta camps and columns,” the resident said.

As the military regime continues to face sustained clashes, a large number of troops have reportedly been deployed in recent days to battalion headquarters, front-line positions and other locations, according to a military source on the ground.

Intense fighting was reported near the Danyawadi Naval base over the past few days, with heavy artillery also being fired.

“The fighting in Kyaukphyu Township has been going on for a long time, but it is more visible these days. The military regime has increased security forces for the elections, and the Arakan Army is constantly firing small arms and light weapons,” another Kyaukphyu resident said.

Due to the ongoing clashes, some residents in Kyaukphyu Township have fled their homes, while others living in the island town have expressed growing concerns about their safety.

During the second week of December, the military regime carried out airstrikes on Ngalonesu, Intainggyi, Kyaukkalay and Minyat villages in Kyaukphyu Township, resulting in civilian casualties.

The military regime is scheduled to hold elections in Kyaukphyu, Sittwe and Manaung townships in Arakan State on December 28.
