Fighting between the military and the Arakkha Army (AA) is escalating in Gwa Township, Arakan State, according to military sources.
Clashes between the military and AA have been reported near Sarchet and Kaingkhon villages and the Gantgawkyun Reservoir since September 4, with the former responding to the latter’s attacks with aerial and naval support.
“The military clashed with the AA near Gantgawkyun Reservoir on Friday. The military defended against the AA attacks with aerial and naval support,” said a military source.
The regime has prepared a defence in Kalarpyin near Kaingkhon Village and sent reinforcements from the military’s Gwa-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 562.
Local people in Gwa Township are facing food shortages due to a junta ban on the transportation of food and medicines since August 10.
“It has been [nearly] one month since the fighting began on August 10. Local people suffer from shortages of food and medicine. Residents living in and around villages where junta troops are stationed are more affected by food and medicine shortages,” said a local resident.
Fighting has displaced at least 30,000 local residents in Gwa Township and most IDPs have fled to Ayeyarwady and Yangon regions.
Though the fighting between Myanmar military and AA forces has become more frequent, intense and widespread across much of Arakan State in recent months, there have not yet been clashes in Manaung Township.
