A police officer shot dead a Muslim man in front of Police Battalion No. 36 near Bumay village in Arakan State’s Sittwe Township on Sunday morning.

The Muslim man has been identified as Zawmirua Husawnat, a 20-year-old motorcycle taxi driver from Darpaing village in Sittwe Township.

Police checked for a recommendation letter from the man on his way between Bumay and Darpaing villages, and shot him dead as the man was unable to show a letter, an unnamed resident of Darpaing village told DMG, adding that another Muslim man accompanying the deceased was able to produce a recommendation letter for himself.

The Muslim man without a recommendation letter died on the spot and his body was sent to Sittwe Hospital’s morgue, said another man who declined to be named for security reasons.

“His body was sent to Sittwe Hospital for medical examination. I don’t know exactly whether the body will be returned to his family or not,” he added.

Police sources confirmed to DMG that a police constable in his 20s shot dead a Muslim man with a BA-94 sub-machine gun.

A police officer who did not want to be named said the shooting occured because the policeman had an argument with the Muslims while checking for their papers.

“We will investigate the case depending on the results of the medical examination,” the officer added.

The policeman who shot dead the Muslim man is currently detained and could face legal action, pending the results of the investigation, according to the police source.
