The Arakan Army (AA) and the success of its revolutionary journey have been praised by the UWSP, the political wing of Myanmar’s most powerful ethnic armed organisation, the United Wa State Army (UWSA).
“The AA has overcome countless difficulties and gradually grown stronger after an extraordinary journey of 15 years,” the UWSP said in a congratulatory message to mark the 15th anniversary of the founding of the AA.
The UWSP and AA are two brotherhood organisations and have always maintained friendly relations and learned from each other in striving for autonomy and improving people’s lives, the UWSP’s message said.
The message added that the friendship built between the AA and UWSP will also grow stronger with time.
On April 10, 2009, 26 young people formed the AA in Laiza, Kachin State, close to the Chinese border in northern Myanmar, where the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) ethnic armed group is headquartered. Wednesday marked the 15th anniversary of the founding of the AA.
The AA has seized nine towns and hundreds of junta positions in Arakan State and neighbouring Chin State’s Paletwa Township since renewed fighting broke out in November.
