At least four residents of Sittwe’s Mingan Ward were reportedly arrested by junta soldiers at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Dozens of fully armed junta soldiers in five military trucks arrived in Mingan Ward and arrested the four residents, said family members of the detainees.
“My father and his three friends were taken from home. The reason for the arrest is still unknown. Junta soldiers roam the neighbourhood with guns. My father’s whereabouts remain unknown,” a family member of one arrestee told DMG.
A local Mingan resident said an atmosphere of fear pervades the ward.
“People are quiet in Mingan Ward and residents dare not go outside. Fully armed junta soldiers are still roaming around our neighbourhood,” she added.
DMG contacted Mingan Ward administrator U Soe Win about the matter, and he replied that he did not know anything yet.
“I told my children to stay at home due to the junta’s arrests of locals. Some residents were reportedly abducted at a teashop,” said another Mingan resident.
Myanmar’s military regime imposed a nighttime curfew in the Arakan State capital Sittwe on Monday and armoured vehicles patrolled the streets in an apparent show of force as the sun set on a day that saw attacks by the Arakan Army (AA) on multiple military positions elsewhere in Arakan State.
