Indian authorities are aiming to accelerate construction during the upcoming 2027 working season on the road section connecting Zorinpui in Mizoram State, India, to Paletwa Township as part of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP).
On October 5, the Governor of Mizoram State met with representatives from road construction firm IRCON International Ltd. in Aizawl to discuss project progress, implementation challenges, and upcoming operational plans.
According to a presentation by IRCON, the road stretch extending approximately 68 miles from Zorinpui to Setpyitpyin in Paletwa Township on the Myanmar side has achieved 25 percent physical construction completion and 30 percent financial progress.
Highlighting the highway as a strategic priority for the Indian central government, officials instructed the company to prioritize the long-delayed project, ensure significant momentum during the next working season, and immediately report operational difficulties to avoid further delays.
The Kaladan project is a multi-modal transport network designed to link northeastern India with Sittwe Port in Arakan State via sea, river, and land routes.
Under the project framework, cargo from Kolkata, India, reaches Sittwe Port by sea, travels up the Kaladan River to Paletwa, and connects by highway to Zorinpui.
While the maritime and riverine segments were completed and the Sittwe Port was opened in May 2023, the Paletwa to Zorinpui road section remains the crucial missing link required to fully connect the entire transit route to Mizoram State.
Consequently, the Paletwa to Zorinpui road segment serves as the final key section needed to complete the entire Kaladan transport corridor.
Once completed, the route will allow goods from Mizoram and northeastern India to access maritime trade routes through Sittwe Port. The Arakan Army currently controls the vast majority of this transit corridor.
