About 100 junta soldiers and police deployed at Tin Nyo Police Station in Arakan State’s Mrauk-U Township abandoned the station at around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, according to witnesses.

They held talks with officials of the Arakan Army (AA) before abandoning the position and walking toward a hilltop junta outpost on Mt. Lin Mwe near the police station, said a resident of Tin Nyo Village.

“As far as I know, they negotiated with the AA before they abandoned the police station. There was no fighting,” he said.

Myanmar military troops have been stationed on Mt. Lin Mwe, north of Tin Nyo Village, since 2019.

“AA members are clearing Tin Nyo police station, and are also clearing mines in the surrounding area,” said a Tin Nyo Village community elder.

Fresh clashes have erupted between Myanmar military and the AA in Arakan State’s Maungdaw, Rathedaung and Minbya townships, and Chin State’s Paletwa Township, this week.

Police at Sane town’s central police station, Kunchaung police station, Kapaing Chaung police station in Kyaukphyu Township, Ywama and Lamu police stations in Taungup Township, and some police stations in Ramree Township have all reportedly abandoned their bases.

Junta spokesman Major-General Zaw Min Tun said: “Police from small outposts have joined bigger bases as part of the military strategy in Arakan State.”

On the first day of renewed fighting in Arakan State on Monday, personnel abandoned around 40 border guard police outposts and police stations to join nearby junta bases, the AA said on Tuesday.
