More than 120 junta soldiers at an outpost on Mount Manyin Mountain in Arakan State’s Rathedaung Township surrendered to the Arakan Army (AA) on Monday morning, according to sources.
The AA attacked the Mount Manyin outpost on Monday morning. After a few minutes of fighting, over 120 junta soldiers surrendered, and some 50 others fled to Buthidaung with their arms, according to a source.
“They surrendered only after a few minutes of fighting. Some 20 junta soldiers were killed in the fighting,” said the source.
The AA has been attacking junta bases in Rathedaung Township. Junta soldiers that fled their bases there have asked the AA to allow them to flee to Buthidaung and Maungdaw unharmed, threatening that they would open fire on villages if AA troops attempt to stop them.
Residents from Pyeintaw, Nyaungbinhla and Manhyintaung have fled their homes due to the junta soldiers’ threat.
“They have fled for fear that they might be attacked,” said a resident of Manhyintaung Village.
Fighting has been raging in Arakan State and neighbouring Chin State’s Paletwa Township for more than two months, with the AA seizing hundreds of junta outposts and tactical command bases.
The AA has claimed to have taken complete control of Paletwa Township, and is fighting to seize junta bases in towns in Arakan State.
AA chief Maj-Gen Twan Mrat Naing has warned junta soldiers to surrender as early as possible if they do not want to get killed or harmed.
