The Myanmar military is reportedly establishing a permanent base with a large number of troops in Kangyi Village, located on a strategic trade route in Saw Township, Magway Region, according to local sources.
Residents said that beginning on April 25, more than 200 troops from the Kyaukhtu-based Artillery Battalion No. 367 moved into Kangyi Village to prepare for the construction of a permanent camp.
"There are very few people left in Kangyi Village now. The regime has taken up positions with a massive force. We've also heard that they plan to launch an offensive toward Mindat. Since the junta troops set up camp, people are afraid to travel back and forth because of reports of arrests," a local man said.
Due to the establishment of the base, residents from nearby villages are fleeing to safer areas, fearing that intense fighting could soon break out.
Kangyi Village is situated on the road connecting Saw Township in Magway Region to Mindat Township in Chin State.
This route serves as a vital artery for goods flowing from Magway Region into Arakan State. Traders are currently facing significant difficulties due to the military expansion along this trade route.
"Lately, many traders from Arakan State have paused their operations. Traders are in a state of panic because of the military presence and the newly established base. Most have decided to wait and see," said a trader in Kyauktaw Township.
Locals also reported that while building the permanent base in Kangyi Village, the military is carrying out preparations and arresting and interrogating travelers passing through the area.
This shift in military activity in Magway follows the recent arrival of a new military chief in the region. Analysts suggest that the reinforcement of troops and the construction of permanent bases in Magway indicate a strategic attempt by the military to push into Chin and Arakan states.
