The junta-controlled Ministry of Information announced on April 23 that it has revoked the publishing licences of Chin State-based news outlets Khonumthung Media Group and Chin World, as well as Nowadays News.
The regime alleged that these news organizations were shut down for publishing content that undermines national security, the rule of law, and community peace and tranquility.
According to the announcement, the ban on these media outlets took effect on April 9, 2026. The decree further prohibits them from publishing any news through any form of media or technology.
Despite the revocation of its licence, Khonumthung Media Group issued a statement on Friday asserting that it will continue to provide accurate information to the public.
Since the military coup, media freedom in Myanmar has vanished. Khonumthung Media Group noted in its report today that the regime has consistently targeted independent media by revoking licenses and arresting and imprisoning journalists.
Khonumthung Media Group was officially registered as a news agency under the NLD government before the coup. Although its license expired in 2025, the agency reportedly chose not to renew it under the military dictatorship.
Similarly, Nowadays News stated that media freedom cannot be suppressed, declaring that the hands that hold cameras and pens will never serve the dictator.
" The regime’s announcement regarding the closure is illegitimate, and we will not pay any attention to it. No matter the obstacles, we will continue to broadcast the truth and ground level news that the public deserves to know through various means. Regardless of the pressure, we will stand with the people and uncover the truth in accordance with media ethics, " Nowadays News stated on April 24.
Nowadays News is an independent media outlet that has operated ethically and was officially registered during the civilian government’s tenure.
On March 6, 2021, shortly after the coup, regime forces in four vehicles raided the Nowadays News office, destroying office equipment. The news agency stated that this act clearly demonstrated an attempt to hide the truth and violated media freedom.
Since the coup, the regime has continued to suppress media freedom while committing human rights violations across the country.
